Culling from the colloquial, a turn of phrase, song lyric, punctuation mark, or element of cinematic syntax all become fodder from which she explores the problems and possibilities of language. Her work has been exhibited nationally at The Power Plant, Toronto; The Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; The Ottawa Art Gallery, Ottawa; the Biennale Le Mois de la Photo, Montreal; Agnes Etherington Arts Centre, Kingston; and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, as well internationally at galleries and festivals including Artists Space, NYC; Musée de Louviers, Paris; Humberside University Gallery, London; ISEA 97, Chicago; Galapagos Art Centre, Brooklyn, NY; Recent Canadian Video, Cairo; and Canadian Fall, Glasgow. Via then went to Sherbrooke for a month long residence, followed by an exhibition called Under Influences in 2007-2008.

Karen Trask

Home, 2003
pigment ink-jet print on washi, 21.5 cm x 24 cm
courtesy of artist
value: $500

Karen Trask is a multidisciplinary artist living in Montreal. It's a skiing trail that doesn't go up or downhill and is marked out with 500 reflective thumbtacks (from the local snow machine shop) The tacks (which make points of light if you have a flashlight) are pressed into trees so that they are perfectly level with each other. The project is derived from skiing and the need to stay level so a part of this project is the idea of a contour line on a topographical map and the realization of such a line on the hard landscape. The direction of the flat path is limited by the height of one’s eye level at the tree and by the base of the tree at the ground. These tacks make a wide trail of reflective dots that is not a straight path but rather a winding ring around the top of the hill. A level line is maintained from tack to tack until the path returns to the beginning wrapping it's way around a hill. Analogous with the rings of Saturn where rocks in the ring are points of light. When skiing near this artwork one feels the uneasy sense of something too flat; like a horizon or the surface of a lake. It's about 1km long.

Steve Topping lives and works in Montreal, Quebec and St. John’s, Newfoundland. His work is at once fragile and multiform, operating on the same level as everyday experience: simultaneously rational and chaotic, undeniably concrete yet shaped by the imagination. In a voice that combines poetry and social commentary, his work conjures and reactivates a variety of narratives drawn from history, popular culture, and the social environment. It also reflects an interest in the exhibition per se – both its fictional power and its temporal component. Recent exhibitions include a survey exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain in Montréal and a solo exhibition at the Witte de With in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In the past four years she has also investigated mechanical time using timelapse photography. Lois received her BFA (Honours) from York University in 1990 graduating First Class with Distinction. Exhibiting nationally and internationally, her sculptural installations have been shown in Toronto, Montreal, Lethbridge, New York, and Mexico City. Lois is represented by the Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto, and by Galerie Art Mûr, Montreal.

Orest Tataryn's interests can be seen in his investigations of light and shadow through the medium of neon. He uses neon as a sculptural medium and is concerned with reducing material environments to their simplest form. He recently installed window exhibitions at Stantec gallery, Toronto, Convenience Gallery, Toronto, and Galerie Art Mûr, Montreal. Tatayrn has two permanent installations at the Gladstone Hotel. He also works with artists, designers and architects to execute their ideas that need to be expressed using technologies of lighting; in particular, neon tube type illumination, fiber optics and LED. Orest made his entry into the art scene in 1989 via the guerrilla art group Skunkworks/Outlaw Neon. He is currently represented by Made, Toronto.

John Abrams

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 301px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WjTUQTsNYNw/Sdzy_eWPbbI/AAAAAAAAALU/Z8c6a_U8BxQ/s400/Abrams%2767Pontiac09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322396031937113522" />
Pontiac, 2009
Oil and car model on canvas, 11 x 14 x 4"
courtesy of the artist and Paul Petro Contemporary Art
value: $1,200

Named one of "Canada's best new figurative painters" in Saturday Night Magazine, John Abrams was born in Montreal and currently lives and works in Toronto. Interested in the impact of visual media on the present, his paintings have explored imagery from mass media, popular culture and history. Whether drawing upon images from films, newspapers, glossy magazines or Canadian history, Abrams' work offers a fresh perspective. Characterized by a simple palette, his luminous paintings have gradually incorporated colour, although he continues to work monochromatically. A founding member of Loop Gallery (Toronto), Abrams' paintings can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Canada Council Art Bank, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery, and University of Toronto Art Centre as well as numerous other private collections.

If you cannot attend the auction please consider making a charitable donation to C THE VISUAL ARTS FOUNDATION (bn886431162RR0001) through CanadaHelps.org

Media and ticket inquiries: Kate Monro, Associate Publisher T:416-539-9485, manager@cmagazine.com
Tickets $50 / $40 in advance, Ticket Form available at http://cmagazine.com

Subscribe to C Magazine, visit cmagazine.com for information.

C Magazine gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for The Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and Canadian Heritage.
